Title

12b

Source

A "sentiment" from “The Beauties of History; Or, Pictures of Virtue and Vice, Drawn from Real Life.”

Notes

"Beauties" was compiled by L.M. Stretch, M.A., and went through many editions.

This commonplace entry shows that the excerpts were not randomly compiled — this maxim clearly follows from the previous entry, which tells the story of a Spanish colony giving safe haven to the British ships.

Transcription

Pity, compassion, and even forgiveness, when not inconsistent with prudence and our own safety, is due to our enemies.
